The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has required every water supply Utility in the U.S. to document the pipe material used for every water service line, which includes the customer owned portion between the curb valve and the customer’s structure. The Village of Versailles currently conducts lead and copper testing at various locations throughout our distribution system on a tri-annual basis, but we need your help documenting your home or business. Please note this is only an inventory survey to help determine if lead service lines exist within the distribution system.
A service line is the underground pipe that carries water from the water main, likely in the street, into your home or building. We are required to determine the material that your service line is made of, which is where we need your help.
Service lines are typically copper, plastic, lead, or galvanized iron or steel. Older homes and buildings may have a lead service lines. Drinking water is free from lead when it leaves our water treatment plant. However, water can absorb lead as it travels through lead pipes on its way to your faucet. Lead can cause serious health problems. If you have a lead service line, we need to take steps to reduce your lead exposure risk. Knowing your service line material is very important for your health and safety!
The Village of Versailles is asking for your help to determine the material that your water service line is made of. Please follow these easy steps to report your findings to the Village. Step 1: Locate the Water Service Line & Test Area
The water service line is typically found in the basement where your meter is located. Identify a test area on the pipe between the point where it comes into the house and the inlet valve. If the pipe is covered or wrapped, expose a small area of metal.
Step 2: Test the Pipe Material
You can find out your type of pipe by doing the scratch, magnet and tapping test. Take note of the reaction.
Step 3: Report your Results
